As all the best Grands Crus from the Medoc area, Loudenne vineyard is benefiting from an exceptional terroir: 2 gravely hills that slope gently down to the banks of the Gironde estuary, reflecting the sun rays, reducing the risk of frost and helping the grapes to ripen. This privileged terroir contributes to the unique complexity and finesse of Château Loudenne wines. Terroir and vineyard: Terroir: 2 hills made of Garonne gravel mixed with clay on a limestone sub-soil. Vineyard: 31 ha (76 acres) – average 42 y.o. Density: 6 700 plants / hectare (the oldest having a lower density 5 000 plants / ha). 52 % Merlot - 48 % Cabernet Sauvignon. 2018 weather conditions: After a very rainy winter and spring, the vintage made a 180-degree turn at the beginning of July and the Bordeaux miracle occurred once again with a beautiful summer and autumn. Thanks to its privileged terroir and our special attention, Loudenne has been able to get through the mildew attacks that the Bordeaux vineyard has experienced. The summer, meanwhile, was the warmest after 2003 but without the heat-hot excesses and blockages of the vines. The water reserves of the soils, well filled by winter and spring rains, have allowed the vines to withstand the summer drought. Rain at the beginning of September was welcome, followed by a dry period throughout the harvest period. The 2018 vintage will be among the most structured with a perfect maturity for all grape varieties. Harvest: From September 27th until October 17th. Plot selection. Hand picking in small crates. Sorting table on reception. Transfer by gravity in the vats.
